About The Heisman Memorial Trophy | ||
The Heisman Memorial Trophy was originally presented in 1935 as the DAC Trophy by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City. It was awarded to the best college player east of the Mississippi River. But in 1936, that rule was changed to include players from across the country. Also in that year, the award was renamed the Heisman Memorial Trophy to honor former outstanding college coach and DAC Director of Athletics John W. Heisman. Heisman died October 3, 1936. The award has since been given annually to the outstanding college football player in the United States. |
