Texas tailback Ricky Williams ran for 2,124 yards and broke Tony Dorsett's 22-year-old record for career rushing yards. He lead Texas to an 8-3 record and a Cotton Bowl berth against Mississippi State. In the process, he set 15 NCAA records (including 6,279 yards rushing; 72 TDs rushing; 452 points; 7,206 total yards) and 40 Longhorn marks, dedicating his season to 1948 heisman winner Doak Walker who died September 1998 (Williams won the Doak Walker award as the nation's best running back). Williams averaged 33 carries per game in totalling 2,124 yard and 28 toucndowns (27 rushing and 1 receiving). He had two 300-yard games with a 20-16 upset of Nebraska, and finished with 259 yards against Texas A&M.
