The Joe Morgan Celebrity Golf Classic was a sanctioned Celebrity Players Tour (CPT) event that included a 1-day ProAm round (Thursday), over 18 holes. Friday featured a Celebrity/Amateur Shootout pairing two amateurs with two celebrities. The official celebrity competition consisted of a two-man best-ball team challenge for a $250,000 total purse. Individual Celebrity scores from Friday's 18-hole shootout were awarded part of the purse. Saturday and Sunday team competition (36 holes) were awarded the remaining purse and determined Event champions.
The golf and event activities were held at the Granite Bay Golf Club (Map) near Sacramento California. In 1998 and 1999, the event raised over $300,000 for Youth Mentoring Programs, such as the Joe Morgan Youth Foundation, Project COOL, and Big Brothers & Big Sisters. In 2000, this event changed name and sponsorship to the Toyota Celebrity Players Cup.
In 1998 and 1999, ProMax, Inc., an event management company located in Portland, Oregon provided logistics, on-course management, and web services to the Joe Morgan Celebrity Golf Classic. ProMax also provided this service to the Celebrity Players Tour at the 1997 Jack Wagner Celebrity Classic, in Columbia, Missouri.
